3 Surefire Ways to Become More Creative

Are you as creative as you would like to be? Are you able to think creatively; use your imagination to think of original new ideas; recognize opportunities others fail to see; find creative and ingenious ways to solve problems?

Creative thinking is a priceless gift. The ability to use your imagination to form images in your mind of situations you have never actually experienced is one of the most valuable qualities you can possess.

Not only will creative thinking be of vital importance if your work involves any form of artistic expression, such as creative writing, painting, photography, song-writing, fashion design, advertising, architecture, pottery and similar fields, it is just as important in the world of business.

In order to be successful in the highly competitive world of business and stand out from the crowd, it's essential to think creatively; develop new products; make use of new ideas and use fresh, new marketing strategies.

Creative thinking is a life-skill that will help you achieve success in virtually every field.

Fortunately creative thinking is a life skill that can be developed. In the same way as certain muscles of your body can be developed with special exercises, there are a number of effective ways to stimulate your creative imagination and generate creative ideas.

Here are 3 "surefire ways" ways you can use to develop your creative imagination and improve your ability to think more creatively. They are "surefire" ways because they definitely do work!

1. MODERN "ABSTRACT ART" CAN HELP DEVELOP YOUR CREATIVE IMAGINATION.

Even though you may have very little interest in art, especially abstract, so-called "modern art", make a point of going to a nearby art museum or art gallery and spend some time sitting and looking very closely at paintings that might seem weird and completely unintelligible to you.

Take a pen and a notepad with you. As you look at the painting make a note of the emotions that come to mind.
It's important to remember that this is not an exercise to try and establish what the artist is trying to express. The purpose of the exercise is to practice using your own creative imagination to form images in your mind of what the painting represents to you. It is a valuable exercise in developing your creative imagination.

2. START THINKING LIKE A CHILD AGAIN AND CREATE MENTAL IMAGES OF WORDS

Children have the ability to make use of their fertile imaginations to create remarkable fantasy worlds. They invent imaginary playmates who exist only in their minds. They are able to us use their imaginations to make inanimate objects come alive. A pillow becomes a horse on which they are able to gallop away into a make-believe world: An armchair can become a powerful racing car.

Children are also enthralled with words. Certain words also have special significance for a child. The sound or the sight of the word triggers off an emotional experience and creates a strong visual image in their minds.

Can you remember how fascinated you were as a child with puns? The first jokes you ever heard were probably puns.

Recapture your own childhood fascination with words. Learn to use your imagination in the same way as you did as a child.

Here is a useful excercise. Go to your bookshelves and take out any book. Choose a book at random, without any preconceived idea of the type of book you want.

Open at any page and choose a number of words on the page that seem to hold your attention.

Let us say, for example, the three words that have selected, completely at random, are the following:

REFLECT CROSS FAIR

I have selected three words, but it could be a lesser or greater number.

Write these words down on paper and examine each one in turn for a few minutes.

Next to each word write down your immediate, spontaneous reaction to the word.

The word REFLECT may have personal emotional connotations. It is possible the word may immediately make you think about reflecting on some incident that happened to you or in the past. Perhaps it was a happy incident or maybe a sad incident.

On the other hand it may be something without any emotional connection. It may make you think simply of your reflection in a mirror. Think of an alternative meaning for the word.

For example, if the alternative meaning you have thought of for the word "reflect" is the reflection of a mirror and this made you think of a mirror, visualize using a mirror in a certain way. For example as a childish game to reflect strong rays from the sun into someone's eyes.

Go to the next word you have written down and repeat the process. Let us presume the word happens to be 'CROSS".

Think about an incident or situation that annoyed you. Think back about your reaction to the incident.

Then think about the many alternative meanings for the word. Perhaps it might be an emotional experience when you think of a CROSS you have to bear.

Repeat the process with each word in turn. For example the word FAIR might make you think of a girl with fair hair. Create an image in your mind of this person. Or it may make you think of being unbiassed and objective in your judgement. Think of a situation when you belie ve you acted very fairly.

Go back to each word and start to think of a number of different meanings for the word.

Conjure up vivid images in your mind of the different meanings you have found for these words.

Repeat this exercise as often as you can. You will find that there will be an incredible improvement in your ability to use your imagination.

3. GIVE YOUR FIVE SENSES A WORKOUT

Certain smells trigger off images in your mind. They have been retained in your memory. For example the smell of boot polish may immediately trigger off memories of school days. They could be happy memories or unpleasant memories.

A certain cooking odor may remind you a particular birthday party you attended.

Do your best to consciously recall the odor even after it has gone. Use similar exercises to test your sight, hearing; your sense of touch and taste.

You probably know people who have an exceptional ability to immediately recognize and identify a voice they hear on the telephone. How do they do this this?

They have developed a special skill. They concentrate and listen intently when they speak to someone. They are aware of inflections in the voice; voice patterns; slightly different ways in which individual words are pronounced.

Sometimes they even form mental images of the people to whom they are speaking.

Is this a skill you can develop? Certainly. It is not as difficult as you might think and will certainly help you to be more aware.

When you are more observant , you become more aware of everything that does around you. You learn to use your five senses more effectively.

By making better use of your five sense, you will find you are able to use your imagination more effectively. You will be able to rearrange the stored knowledge you have acquired and create something new different and original. This is the key to creative thinking.

The examples I have given are only three of a great number of ways to improve your creative imagination.

Once you get used to the process of constantly creating images in your mind - and it becomes almost second nature - not only will your ability to think creatively improve dramatically, you'll find you'll achieve far great success in your own special field.
