What Do You Mean by "Deductible?"

The technical definition for "deductible" is the amount of loss an insurance policyholder must pay before he begins to be reimbursed by an insurance company. Every insured person has an option of selecting the amount he is willing to pay for dollar losses he incurs due to medical expenses. That amount is the deductible. After that, the insurance company covers costs.

For example, if the insured chooses a $500 deductible on a health or travel insurance plan and then breaks his leg, the insured will pay the first $500 of medical bills. After that (if no co-insurance limits are involved) the insurance company will pay the rest up to the maximum of the policy. For example, if the medical bills end up being $5,000, the insured will pay $500 (the deductible amount) and the insurance company $4,500.

There are various deductibles available on insurance plans: $100, $250, $500, $1,000, $2,500, $5,000, $10,000, $25,000. In fact, some plans are $0 deductible. The rule is the higher the deductible, the lower the premium (the amount you pay for the insurance).

What deductible should you chose? Ask yourself this question: "In a worse-case scenario, how much money could I manage to dig up for medical expenses?" If you could easily find $1,000, then choose a $1,000 deductible.

Deductibles start at January 1 and extend through the rest of the year, beginning again at the New Year.

When you look at insurance plans you want to find out which benefits go towards the deductible and which benefits go to co-pays. Co-pays have no bearing towards the deductible, so anything you pay towards your co-pay will not go towards your deductible.

A good insurance broker or agent will be able to help explain these terms and to help you find insurance rates that will be best for you.
